Valentines Day is right around the corner and today, we’re getting ready with yet another love themed craft! These cute little paper plate love birds are really simple yet fun to make. My children and I each made our own little pair of birds using two colours and we just love how they turned out. This cute little craft idea is great for primary aged children who love to make.

Here’s what we used

  • Paper plates
  • Paint
  • Coloured card
  • Feathers
  • Pipe cleaners x 2
  • Glue/glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrush

How to make our paper plate love birds

Start by taking your paper plate and cutting out a section around 1/3 of the size of the paper plate. Round off one of the corners slightly to make the smooth edge of the lovebirds head.

Use your paint to cover and colour the paper plate to make the body of your cute little love bird. Pop it aside to dry.

Once dry, take your coloured card and cut out a smallish heart. Glue the heart central on the paper plate body with its point facing upwards toward the head to make the wing of your bird. Now cut out a triangular beak and glue it down in position on the front of the bird’s head as you can see in the picture above.

To make the eyes cut out a white circle for the outer eye and then a slightly smaller coloured circle for the inner eye. Glue the two pieces together, and then glue the eye down onto the bird.

Now we need to make the legs. Take your first pipe cleaner and twist three equal bends into one end as above.

Twist the loose end onto the main piper cleaner just above the bends that you just created to make the leg. Repeat this process with your second pipe cleaner and then twist the two together.

Glue the legs in place on the back of the birds body and then add some tail feathers to the back. Your little love bird is finished. Now all that’s left to do is make them a little lovebird friend!
