This gorgeous printable jack and the beanstalk figures and growing beanstalk craft is a great follow-on activity for one of my all-time favourite kids’ stories! These can be used as a story talk to help children retell the story their own way. My two had loads of fun copying the original story and then making their own fun variations!
Here’s what you’ll need
- Our free printable figures and plant pot template
- Green card
- Scissors
- Glue
- Tp roll or lollipop sticks (optional)
How to make our printable jack and the beanstalk figures and growing beanstalk
Start by cutting out the shapes of your plant pot, if you have printed our colourful desgin directly onto card you can just use the printed card. If you are instead using our template to draw around, you’ll need to draw the shapes onto your chosen card and cut them out.

Take the plant pot piece and snip along the dotted lines.

Now glue the two ends together to make the cylindrical shape of your plant pot and fold the cut tabs inwards so that they’re pointing towards the centre of the pot.

Cover the tabs in glue and then press the plant pot down onto a brown circle that will be the plant pot base.

Take your piece of paper and fold it in half lengthways, then again and then one more time. Cut along the lines to give you 8 green strips.

Take two of your green strips and glue them together on a right angle. Fold the bottom strip over the top strip and then the new bottom strip over the new top one

Continue this process all the way along to make a spring. Once you’ve reached the end, glue down the loose end of the paper strip.

Repeat this process two or three more times so that you have three or four springs and then glue the springs together to make one big long beanstalk.

Add a blob of glue to the centre of your plantpot and then glue one end of the beanstalk down in place inside the pot.

Take your little plant sprout, fold it along the line, and then glue the sprout onto your brown circle of soil.

Stretch your beanstalk out and glue on some little leaves along the. Stalk. Finally glue the circle of soil onto the end of the beanstalk. Once dry, your super cute printable growing beanstalk is finished! If you’d like to customise them a little more, then why not add some fun decorations to the little plant pots!

To finish off, take your printable characters and optionally laminate them and cut them out. You can use these in any way you like, for example you could attach lollypop sticks onto them to use them as puppets or alternatively you could do what we did and use sections of tp roll and glue them on the back to make them stand up. That’s what my daughter chose to do so that she could make up a story and record it too!
