If you have been following the blog at all you may have noticed that a good majority of our crafts are animal based. All of the crafts we make are designed to fit in with the kid’s interests and my son has been interested in animals for as long he’s been able to walk and talk. He has a whole safari of animal crafts, toys and books stashed throughout the house. He loves to learn about his favourite animals too. For today’s craft he wanted to make a cat, so we came up with this cute paper plate cat craft, my little guy is so pleased with how they turned out and I can see why!
You will need:
Paper plate
White and black paper/card
Coloured paper
Scissors
Glue
Take your white card and cut out two pointy white ears for your cat. Then, from your pink paper you’ll need to cut out two slightly smaller inner ears. Glue the inner ears down onto the outer ears and then glue them in place on the back of your paper plate.
Now to make the eyes! Cut out two black circles to make the base of the eyes. Next cut out two slightly smaller coloured circles to make the iris’. Glue your coloured circle onto your black circle and then cut out an oval black pupil. Glue the pupil down in the centre of your cat’s eye then secure the eyes down on the plate.
Cut out a rounded pink triangle to make the nose. Glue it down centrally on the plate – just below the eyes.
Next it’s time to give your cat a mouth, we cut our W shaped mouth out of black paper but if you have a good black marker you can simply draw it on instead – this might be easier for younger children. Once you’ve added the mouth, take your black paper and cut out some long thin strips to make the whiskers. Stick them down on either side of the face and then put your cat aside to dry.
The final piece that you will need to make is the collar. To do this you’ll need to cut out a banana shaped piece of paper and a yellow circle for the name tag. Glue the tag down onto your collar and then secure the collar in place on the back of your plate.
Add your cat’s name to the collar and he is finished! Doesn’t he look Purrfect?!
My little guy is a huge fan of all things under the sea. He loves to learn about the ocean environment and the creatures that live within it. Whales are his absolute favourite and it’s easy to see why, they’re pretty impressive. Right now he’s really interested in Narwhals. Hence today’s craft; this cute paper plate Narwhal! Isn’t he cute?
You will need
Paper plate
Blue paint
Black and white card
Black marker
Scissors
Glue
First you’ll need to draw your whale shape on to your paper plate as you can see above (once I have a functioning scanner I will scan in my template so watch this space!). Cut out your whale shape and paint it in your chosen colour. Put your narwhal aside to dry.
Once dry, it’s time to give your Narwhal an eye! Cut out a black circle for the base of the eye, then cut out a white circle and a another smaller white circle to make the light spots. Glue the pieces together to make the eye and then glue it down in place on your narwhal.
Cut out a white cone shape to make the tusk and then use your black marker to draw on the lines. Glue the tusk down in place on the back of your paper plate.
Finish off your super cute Narwhal by using your black marker to draw on a smiley mouth and a flipper. Doesn’t he look sweet!?
Like so many others right now we are spending almost all of our time at home or in the garden. Crafting has always been a part of our day but now i’m busy trying to come up with even more to keep our 4yo entertained alongside learning his letters and numbers. Like many others he misses his friends at school so it’s been important for us to make sure that he has fun things to do each day. These Autumn spiky paper hedgehogs are not just one of my favourite crafts of today but one of my favourite ever. i think they’re adorable and they definitely provided an hour of fun after we ended up making a whole family of them!
You will need:
Light and dark brown paper or card
White paper
Colored paper
Black marker
Scissors
Glue
First take your brown card and cut out the elongated tear shape of your hedgehog’s body as you can see above.
Cut out a round or heart shaped nose from your coloured paper. Then cut out a white oval and draw on the outer eye and pupil using your black marker. Glue the eye and nose down onto your hedgehog.
Cut out some strips of your dark brown card and fold them in half to make squares.
Glue your squares down in row on your hedgehog to make his spikes. Put aside to dry and your super cute hedgehog is finished!
Is it just me or are unicorns a “thing” right now? They are everywhere you look and my little niece is absolutely obsessed with them! I must admit when she came over on the weekend and asked to make ‘loads of unicorn crafts’ i was a bit stumped. Unicorns are not something my son has really ever been interested in so it was a bit of a challenge to come up with some fun crafts for her to make. We got there in the end though and i absolutely love this accordion paper unicorn craft!
You will need
Thick white paper OR White Card
Coloured paper
Marker pen OR googly eyes
Scissors
Glue
How to make this Paper unicorn craft
First you will need to cut out a circle for your unicorn’s head. Then, cut out two horseshoe shapes to make the legs and body. You’ll need to make sure the legs are equal shape/size, the easiest way to do this is to fold you card in half and cut out two at once or cut one out and draw around it.
Now to cut out the shapes for your unicorn’s face/head. You will need two outer ears, two slightly smaller inner ears, an oval nose and a unicorn horn.
Glue the pieces down in position on the circle head piece.
Give your unicorn two eyes and then you’ll need to make your mane and tail. We did this by cutting out and gluing down some coloured strips but alternatively you could use markers to draw them on.
Next to make your spring! Take two strips of paper and glue them together to make a right angle.
Then take turns folding each strip over the other. Once you reach the end secure the two lose ends together with glue or tape.
Glue your unicorn’s head down in place on its legs. Then stick one end of your spring down on the inside of it’s front legs and the other end down on the inside of its back legs. Your super cute paper unicorn is finished!
The snail and the whale written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler is by far my son’s favourite book. I can pretty safely say that i now know the entire story off by heart. Fortunately i love every children’s book they’ve ever made together so it’s never a chore reading it over and over. The BBC also aired a short film of the snail and the whale at christmas too which we absoloutely love to snuggle up and watch. It was from watching this that we came up with our cute snail and the whale craft which has taken pride of place next to his paper plate gruffalo in his room!
You will need
Paper plate
Card
Glue
Blue paint
Black Marker
Coloured paper

Googly Eyes
Take your paper plate and paint on a blue crescent on the top half of your whale’s head. Put your plate to one side to dry.
Take your A4 piece of card and cut out the shape of your whale’s tail. If necessary, paint your tail blue and put aside to dry.
Cut out the shapes to make your snail, you’ll need a slug shaped body, two feelers and a curvy shell. Use a marker to decorate your shell.
Glue your pieces of snail together and then finish her off by adding two googly eyes and by drawing on a big smiley mouth.
Now to make your whale! Take your marker and draw a smiley mouth along your blue crescent line. Draw several lines down from the mouth to the bottom of the plate.
Cut out two white circles for your whale’s eyes and use your marker to colour some pupils. Glue them down on your paper plate.
Finish off by sticking down your snail on the whale’s tail. How cute do they look?!
