How cute is this little pipe cleaner pen topper octopus craft? There are so many things that my little guy loves to do, unfortunately though learning to write just isn’t one of them. We have to work really hard to make it seem fun and enjoyable for him. So when we sat down to craft I knew that I wanted to make a pen topper and after a bit of playing we came up with these little cuties! We’ve made a few so that he can change colors as he pleases and so far they’ve worked wonders. He thinks they’re really funny and loves to write with them. We will definitely be coming up with some different designs to make and share in the near future!

Here’s what we used

  • Pipe cleaners
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue gun

How we made our pipe cleaner octopus pen topper craft

First we start off by making the tentacles. Take 4 of your pipe cleaners, line them up equally and then fold them in half to give you an arch shape.

Bend the top 11/2 to 2cm of your arch downwards on itself.

Take another of your coloured pipe cleaners and wrap it around your folded section.

Take a separate color pipe cleaner and fold it in half. Push the folded part fully up inside the center of your octopus. Take some more of your octopus pipe cleaners and wrap them tightly around his head piece to thicken it up and secure your grip piece inside.

Take your pen and push the nib part inside your octopus. Wind your grip tightly around your pen. When you remove the pen your grip piece should stay firmly in place.

Finish off by gluing on two googly eyes and shaping your tentacles. With ours, we bent them up near the body and then rolled up the ends. All that’s left to do now is attach them to your favorite pen and get writing.. so cute!

I must admit that these pipe cleaner snail magnets are my favorite of the day. They’re just so adorable and once you get the hang of them they’re really easy to make too. We have a whole garden full of them on our fridge right now!

Remember though that pipe cleaners can be a bit spiky on the ends, we had a few jabs and a couple of tears from ours!

How to make our pipe cleaner snail magnets

Take your two shell coloured pipe cleaners and twist them together at one end.

Continue twisting the pipe cleaner around each other until you reach the end.

Take one end of your pipe cleaner and begin rolling it around into a spiral shape. Once you are nearing the end, leave the last 2-3cm untouched.

Place your snail coloured pipe cleaner centrally across this loose end and twist it on so that it is secure.

How we made our pipe cleaner apple magnets

Take two coloured pipecleaner and twist them together at one end. For the red apple we used two red pipe cleaners and for the half apple we used one red and one white.

Take one of your loose ends and begin winding it up on itself into a circular shape.

Roll your pipe cleaner all the way into a circle and then twist your loose end around the outer ring of your apple.

Take your brown piper cleaner and thread it through underneath the two outer rings. Fold it In half above your apple and then twist the two pieces together tightly so that it is secure on your apple.

Now roll one end of your green pipe cleaner to create a small circle. Then, take your loose end. Wrap it around the outer ring of your leaf and pull it outwards. Pinch your circle into a leaf.

We have a massive collection of pipe cleaners that we have amassed over the last few months. For some reason though we never really use them much so our collection has just been growing and growing. After the millionth time of putting them back in the drawer after the kids have thrown them everywhere I decided it was time we actually made something with them. I actually came up with the idea for these pipe cleaner bumble bee magnets whilst my son was sat twisting a brown and a yellow pipe cleaner together. It took both him and me a couple of times to get the hang of it but now were bumble bee making pros!

Here’s what we used

Glue

Googly eye

Self adhesive magnets

How to make our pipe cleaner bumble bee magnets

Take your yellow and your brown/black pipecleaner and start twisting the two together at one end.

Continue twisting your two pipe cleaners together. Once you get to about 1cm from the end, snip off your yellow pipecleaner and fold it around your brown one to secure it. You should now have a small section of just brown/black at one end. This will make the stinger.

Take your multicolored end and twist it round and round on itself to make a circular shape.

To secure your loose end, pull your shape firmly and then bring your stinger through the inside of your outer ring and wrap it around this ring twice before bending it outward.

To make your wings, take your white pipe cleaner and twist one end into a loop.

On the other side of this twist, create a second loop. Make it secure by twisting your loose end around the center of your wings a few times and the bringing the loose end down so it hangs beneath the wings.

Use this loose end to twist your wings onto the top of the outer ring of your bee. Once you’ve wrapped it around 2-3 times, cut off any excess. Then, give your bumble bee a googly eye.
