This month’s 5 favourite preschool books: Books I read as a child!
For this month’s 5 favourite books we decided to do something a little different. We’ve chosen our five favourite books for preschool that my parents read to me as a child and I now read to Ted. We really struggled to pick just five as there are so many older books that we love!

The Jolly Postman by Allan Ahlberg and Janet Ahlberg
First published: 1986
Summary: The jolly postman delivers letters to a whole host of our favourite childhood characters and we get to read them!
Why mummy loves this book: This was my all time favourite book as a child, I remember buying it when it was first released. It’s just so visibly impressive, the use of the handwritten letters, the addressed envelopes and the variety of different characters such as The giant, Cinderella and the big bad wolf makes this book so attractive and capturing to young children. It’s also really well written, lovely to read and the rhymes are simple and fun.
Why Ted loves this book: Mummy read this when she was little. It’s so funny, they make letters and the postman gives them to people and there is a wolf and a giant and goldilocks.
Elmer by David Mckee
First published: 1968
Summary: Elmer doesn’t look like all the other grey elephants – Elmer is a patchwork elephant! Elmer begins to wonder what it would be like to look like all the others, after a turn of events he learns that he is much better off and happier being his bright and colourful self.
Why mummy loves this book: I remember having a whole collection of Elmer books but this one was by far my favourite. I was a really nervous and shy child so the gentle message of self acceptance was something I really loved and related to
Why Ted loves this book: I love Elephants. Elmer is really cool and has lots of colours he’s not grey.

I remember using it at school to learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and I’ve used it to help teach Ted too. There are several versions you can buy such as puppet books and touch n feel books and the best part is there is a huge amount of follow on activities and crafts you can do after reading it!
