Toilet roll wand craft for kids

These cute toilet roll magic wands are inexpensive to make and provide hours of fun too!

My kids really loved the toilet roll flowers we made to decorate their rooms. They are forever playing with them and today they were using them as magic wands to turn each other into frogs and whatnot. I thought this was a fab idea and it gave us the inspiration to make these cute little toilet roll wands – I just love them! The kids have played with them for hours, they’re great for imaginative play and provide just as much fun as any store bought toy too. They need a lot of glue gun usage so require an adult to make.

Here’s what we used

  • Toilet rolls
  • Coloured paint and paintbrush
  • Wooden skewer (pointy end removed!)
  • Ribbon
  • Something for the middle (pom pom, button etc)
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun

How to make these toilet roll magic wands

Start by taking some paint and colouring the TP rolls and optionally the wand stick too. For this wand we used one blue roll, one white roll and a painted blue skewer (pointy end chopped off for safety!)

Once dry, take the tp roll that you will be using for the main part of the wand and chop it into five equal rings.

Use the hot glue gun to attach two rings both together and to the stick.

Finish adding the rest of the rings to make a star shape. for stability you will need to make sure they are glued to the rings on either side.

Take the secondary colour tp roll and cut it into 8 strips. Take two of your strips and fold them in half. Glue one of the strips inside the other as above and the repeat this three more times until you have four of these shapes.

Glue your shapes into the empty spaces between the rings of the wand as above. Then add a pom pom, a button or similar to the centre of the wand.

Add any finishing touches such as ribbon or sparkles and the magic wand is finished. These are great for imaginative play!

How adorable are these little yarn tassel doll charms? They were actually inspired by our yarn ghost charms that we made. I noticed how much the tassels looked like dresses and out sprung the idea for this little craft. My son has really enjoyed making these to gift to his nan and aunties, he found them a bit tricky at the start but soon picked it up. He’s also made one to gift to his cousin to go on her school bag – such a cute idea!

Heres what we used

(small objects can be choking hazards, this activity is best suited to older children and children should be supervised at all times)

How to make a tassel doll keyring

First you’ll need to cut out a rectangle from your cardboard, it doesn’t need to be anything fancy – you can see here that were using a battered up piece of cereal box! You’ll need to make sure the height of the rectangle matches the length you want your tassel to be.

Starting at the bottom side, take your yarn and begin wrapping it around your cardboard. Make sure it’s secure but not so tight that it buckles your cardboard. Continue wrapping it around and then once you have reached your desired thickness cut it off at the bottom side where you first started.

Cut off a length of yarn and fold it in half. Then, tie a loop at the centre fold.

Using the two loose ends, tie your loop tightly around the centre of your yarn.

Slip your yarn off of your cardboard. Turn it inside out so that the loop is outside and on top as you can see above.

Place your scissors through the loops and then gently snip them open. I find that the best way to ensure that the ends are snipped evenly is to pull downwards as I snip to ensure I’m snipping the bottom center of each loop.

Now cut two lengths of yarn. Tie one just below the top of your tassel to create the dress shape and the other onto the loop just above your tassel to create arms.

Take your wooden bead and draw your dolls face on to it before threading it onto your loop. Finish off by adding a keying onto the top of your loop. Don’t these yarn tassel doll charms look adorable?

wooden spoon princess puppet craft for kids

For the last few days we’ve been working on a new crafty project. With all the time we have had on our hands it has been so lovely having a big project for us to work on. If you haven’t guessed already, what we have been making is our very own DIY puppet theatre and some wooden spoon puppets to go with it. We’ve had so much fun both making our puppets and playing with them and today I’m really excited to be sharing the first of out new creations with you – our wooden spoon princess puppet!

Isn’t she just adorable? Shes been the centre of many of my sons stories, sometimes she is a princess who needs saving and other times she is the one who saves everyone. One thing I have definitely noticed since playing with the puppets is how much it’s helped strengthen my little guys ability to create a story, it’s also helped with his confidence too.

Here’s what we used:

How to make our wooden spoon princess puppet

To start off glue your lollipop stick centrally across the top of your spoon to make two arms. Next, give your princess some hair, to do this we glued some wool scraps around the curve of the spoon. Add two eyes and a mouth to make her face.

To make the dress, place your puppet onto the back of your felt and draw your dress shape around it on the backing paper. You’ll need to make sure your dress is wider than your puppet in all places.

To save felt you could just stick one dress piece to the front. However we’re planning on using our puppets long term and wanted to make them sturdy as possible. We drew around our dress shape and cut out a second identical piece to make the back. If you decide to cut out a back piece too remember to draw around the dress with both felt sides facing outwards as they will be on the spoon, otherwise your pieces might not match up!

To make our princesses’ cape we cut out a white cape shape with an elongated v shaped collar. The collar might look a bit odd now but it’s how you’ll fold your cape around your spoon.

To attach the dress, stick your first dress piece on to the front and your second on the back. Then pinch them together to meet and stick in the middle. To add the cape place the puppet centrally on it (felt side facing forward). Remove the backing from just a square at the end of each side of your collar and fold the collar over the arms before securing them together at the chest. My little guy then added a cute little bow to look like a fastener.

Finish off your awesome wooden spoon princess puppet by giving her a felt crown and adding any optional decorations. isn’t she just adorable!

Recycled magic wand craft

Recycled magic wand craft

Recycled magic wand craft for kids

Today my son decided he wanted to make something for his little sister. how adorable is that? For the last few days she has been absolutely obsessed with a cardboard tube from inside a foil roll, so I suggested perhaps we should turn it into a magic wand for her. He loved the idea and together we came up with this adorable recycled magic wand craft. For the most part we used recycled materials and after i had glued it together he added some craft buttons too. If you’re planning on making one I would definitely recommended using a glue gun if possible, it just makes them so much stronger. Our magic wand still looks completely untouched, even after being bashed around by a year old all day!

You will need

  • Long cardboard tube (the ones usually found in foil or cling film/saran wrap)
  • An old cereal box
  • Ribbons
  • Any optional decorations
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Glue (we used a glue gun because it’s just faster and the glue is a lot more durable. You can use pva, you’ll just need to peg the pieces whilst they dry, it probably won’t hold quite as strongly either)

How to make your recycled magic wand craft

Take your cardboard tube and paint it in your chosen colour. Once finished, pop it to one side to try.

Take your cereal box and cut out two identical stars. The easiest ways to do this are by either cutting two out at once or by drawing around your first one. Once they have both been cut out, paint them in your selected colour. Put your stars aside to dry.

Once your tube is dry, Cut out 6-8 equal lengths of ribbon and using your glue secure one end of each down on the inside of one side of your tube. Leave the other ends loose.

Glue one of your stars onto the tube and then cover all of it’s back edges in glue before securing the other star on the back.

Optionally add some decorations to your magic wand, then you are finished and ready to cast some spells!

Magical paper cone Fairies

I’m back again with yet another fun paper cone craft! If you think i’m running out of these then you’re wrong, We’ve come up with enough designs today to go on for a week. I wanted to share these magical paper cone fairies tonight though as this is the very first fairy craft i have ever uploaded! I must say, i think they are pretty cute too. The main reason that i love making these paper cone crafts so much is because the only material you really need is thick paper or some card – which is perfect for keeping little ones entertained when crafting resources are running low!

You will need

  • Coloured thick craft paper or card
  • Sticker eyes (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

To make the dress

Take a coloured piece of A4 paper and fold it in half to make a card shape. Then, take a pencil and draw a gradual curve starting from just above the centre of your fold line to the bottom right corner (you’ll need to make sure the curve isn’t too sharp or it won’t match up when folded). Cut out your shape.

Fold your shape in half and trim off any excess to make sure both sides are even.

Open up your shape to reveal your 4 sections Cover one of your end sections in glue..

and then pull it round and stick it down on the back of your other end section to create a triangular cone.

To make the head, wings and arms.

To make the wings chose a colour paper and fold it in half. Using the fold as the centre cut out a wing shape and then open it back up to give you two wings as you can see above. Glue them centrally across one of your triangles, this will be her back.

Now to make the head! Cut out a round circle for the face and a slightly wider arch to make the hair. Glue the face down onto the hair. Cut out a section from the hair to make the neck and then trim the hair into your chosen shape.

Give your fairy a mouth and two eyes. We used eye stickers but you can simply draw them on or cut out two white eyes and draw the details on to them before gluing them down.

To make the arms cut out two rounded strips

. To make your wand, cut out a small strip of card for the handle and a magic star to go on top. Glue the two pieces together. Then, take one end of one of your arms and fold it inwards, glue your wand in place on this folded section like you can see in the picture above.

Use a dab of glue and pinch the top of the cone so that its flat to attach the head to the body. Glue an arm on the triangle either side of the head and your magical fairy is finished! Don’t they look fab!
