Summer flower wreaths

Summer flower wreaths

These gorgeous paper plate summer flower wreaths are a perfect way to welcome in the warmer seasons! They’re simple and easy for children to make, and they look so warm and summery hung up around the house.

We used this as a fun opportunity to talk about seasons and how the natural world around us changes at different times of year.

Here’s what we used

  • Paper plate
  • Green paint and paintbrush
  • Shredded green paper
  • Colourful tissue paper
  • Green card
  • Scissors
  • Glue

How to make our summer flower wreaths

Start by taking your paper plate, painting it green and popping it aside to dry.

Once the plate is totally dry were going to turn it into a wreath by cutting out a circle from the centre so that we have just the outer ring left as can be seen above.

Take your shredded green paper and glue it all around the wreath to add some texture.

Now take your coloured tissue paper and cut out several squares around 6cm x 6cm. Well be using this to make our flowers.

Take one of your squares and pinch it in the centre shaping the outer edges to look like petals. Repeat this step until you have as many flowers as you would like on your wreath.

Glue your flowers all around your wreath and make it look extra beautiful!

Now, cut out some little leaf shapes and use your marker to add some detail to each one, space the leaves out around the flowers and glue them down into place.

Finally tie a loop of string and glue it onto the back of your paper wreath so that it can be hung up somewhere for everyone to see!

Tissue paper butterflies

Tissue paper butterflies

These simple tissue paper butterflies are just beautiful! We usually love making these as a fun summer themed craft. This year, however, i found this super cute heart print tissue paper at our local village shop, and i thought how lovely it would be to make a valentines Day version with the kids. They were so pleased with their butterflies that they asked if we could make them for mothers day too!

Here’s what we used

  • Patterned tissue paper
  • Plain tissue paper
  • A wooden Peg
  • A pipe cleaner
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors
  • Glue

How to make our tissue paper butterflies

Take your patterned tissue paper and cut out a rectangle to make the large outer part of the wing. The rectangle that we used here measures approximately 18cm x 24cm

Now we’re going to take our tissue paper and accordion fold it by folding a section approximately 1.5cm and folding it upwards..

Then flipping over the tissue and folding it the same amount on that side. Continue this process..

Until you reach the end and are left with one long folded strip of tissue paper.

Now we’re going to take our plain tissue paper and cut out another rectangle this time, making sure it’s slightly smaller than the last. Our plain rectangle measured approximately 14cm x 20cm

Repeat the same process with this strip as with the patterned one and accordion fold the plain tissue paper all the way to the end.

You should now have two folded strips, as you can see above

Take your scissors and trim both ends of both folded tissue paper strips into a round c shaped curve.

Place the plain paper wings centrally on top of the patterned paper wings and then pinch the centre to flatten the middle together. Clip the peg onto the centre of the wings and then carefully and slowly fan the wings out on either side. Gently adjust the peg if necessary to shape the wings and pull them in the right direction

Once you’re happy with your wings, take your pipe cleaner and roll the end into a spiral on both sides to make the antennae

Clip the antennae into the mouth of the peg. You could optionally glue them in place if you’d like them to be a bit more secure. Finally, add two googly eyes onto the peg to make its face, and your super cute tissue paper butterfly is finished and ready to gift or play with!

here’s what we used

  • Paper plate
  • Green card
  • Tissue paper
  • Googly eye/sticker eye
  • Scissors

How to make a Paper plate turtle

Start by taking your paper plate and cutting it in half. Next take your tissue paper and either cut or tear off several small multicoloured pieces. Glue your tissue paper down all across the half paper plate to make your decorated shell design.

Cut out a lightbulb shaped piece to make the turtles head and then cut out the shape of your turtle’s mouth on the rounded side of the head as you can see above. Glue the head down on the back of your paper plate.

Now cut out two large L shaped flippers and glue them down in place on the back of the paper plate so that they sit nicely at the bottom of the turtle’s shell.

Finally cut and stick a pointy little tail at the back end of the turtle and add your eye to complete its face.. your turtle is ready to be popped aside to dry!

Paper plate baubles

Paper plate baubles

We’re finally on the last school term of the year here in the uk and that means one thing; Christmas is right around the corner and I’m not sure who is more excited, me or the kids! For our first Christmas craft this year we’ve been busy making one our favourites, these jazzy paper plate baubles. We love using these as part of our window displays, they’re easy to mass produce and each one turns out unique which means these are great to make and display for groups such as schools as well as at home!

Here’s what we used

  • Paper plates
  • Tissue paper
  • Red card
  • Tinsel chenille stem
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Glue gun / sticky tape

How to make our paper plate baubles

Start by decorating your paper plate to make the bauble. We glued several different coloured squares of tissue paper onto ours as they will be hanging in the window and tissue paper looks great in the light but you could almost anything. Some popular options include paints, pens and stickers.

Take your coloured card and cut out a trapezium type shape to make the top of the bauble and glue it in place on one side of the plate.

Take a length of pipe cleaner and twist it into a loop to make the ‘string’ for the bauble. Use a glue gun or tape to secure the loop to the back of the trapezium shape as above and once dry your baubles are ready to display!
